Ridanna/Ridnaun – Monteneve/Schneeberg Mining Museum

The Monteneve/Schneeberg mines produced silver, zinc and lead for more than 800 years. Today the mines are an exciting real-life museum for all the family.

No other mines, in fact, in the Alpine area were ever used for such a long, uninterrupted period. The museum is a great place to gain insight into the culture, customs and lifestyle of the miners in South Tyrol at the time.

During guided tours of various mines you will go into the mountain and get a good feel for what the work used to be like and what treasures are hidden in those mines. The offer is completed by guided hikes to the old knave settlement in San Martino/St. Martin, as well as by a number of exhibitions about the topics of geology and mineralogy.

Wolfsthurn Castle

Wolfsthurn Castle is located just above the village of Mareta/Mareit. This picturesque place is home to the South Tyrolean Museum of Hunting and Fishing. This intriguing museum shows the development of those two activities in South Tyrol from a cultural and historical point of view. The museum tour also leads past the completely preserved glamorous interior of the castle, thus giving the visitor interesting insights into the life of the rich and famous in the 18th and 19th century.

S. Magdalena

St. Magdalena

The pilgrimage church is located between Mareta/Mareit and Ridanna/Ridnaun. This Gothic building was commissioned in 1481 by the mountain knaves and has a rich and historically very interesting past. The highlight of the church is the Gothic high altar designed by Mathias Stöberl, which pictures Saint Magdalena with two knaves in a mine at her feet.

The city originally got its wealth from silver mining in Val Ridanna/Ridnauntal and retains much or its Medieval charm. The city’s beautiful Old Town is a great place for shopping, with many independent shops and boutiques.

Impressive gorges

In the area around Ridanna/Ridnaun you will find a number of impressive, intimidating gorges which can be safely explored on well-marked routes and trails. Achrainschlucht gorge starts near Mareta/Mareit and boasts a spectacular trail which offers superb views. The imposing Burkhartsklamm gorge is located at the end of the valley of Val Ridanna/Ridnauntal in Masseria/Maiern. The most famous of all, however, is the legendary Gilfenklamm gorge at the beginning of Val Racines/Ratschingstal.
