Discover Sterzing, Italy’s northernmost town

A little historical gem of timeless charm

Only a 15-minute drive from Erlebnisort Gassenhof, the historical trading town of Sterzing (also known as Vipiteno in Italian) is a must-see attraction in its own right. In centuries past, Italy’s northernmost town reached its heyday thanks to the silver and lead extracted from the Schneeberg mines in the nearby Ridnauntal valley. The mines were owned by the Fuggers, a wealthy family from Augsburg whose name is tightly intertwined with the town – so much so, that Sterzing is sometimes still referred to as “Fuggerstadt” (Fuggers’ town).

Cultural and historical sights

Small though it may be, Sterzing offers its fair share of cultural attractions and artistic treasures. These include, for example, the town hall and the Multscher Museum, which hosts some late Gothic altarpieces from the 15th century by the renowned sculptor Hans Multscher. The Zwölferturm clock tower, rising proud at 46 metres, is the town’s highest building as well as its most iconic landmark, with the mountains in the backdrop adding a unique flair.

Sterzing is a worth a visit in every season, but we especially recommend it in December, when the Christmas market bathes the town in a sea of pleasant lights, scents and sounds.
